Nine To Five Attitude - Seaside Secrets Award winner

Nine To Five Attitude
Seaside Secrets
by Bex "Hardcore" Tasker at 21 November 2013, 3:48 PM

NINE TO FIVE ATTITUDE are a German Post-Hardcore / Metalcore band who formed in 2009. The five-piece certainly bring forth the angst in their debut EP, “Seaside Secrets”, a 4-track masterpiece fuelled by emotion and performed with talent. The band are influenced by acts such as UNDEROATH, AUGUST BURNS RED and PARKWAY DRIVE, and are currently unsigned. I think that’s terrible. Any record companies reading this: sign them up, dude, they’re great.

The EP kicks off in true Hardcore fashion, with melodic riffs and passionate growls. “Land Ahoy” may have a pirate vibe by name, but musically it’s far from it.  Vocals by Manu Nachbauer are gruff in the verses but are joined by catchy cleans in the chorus. The two guitarists Denis Akok and Yannick Forstenäusler have definitely chosen the right career; their combined efforts really making the song. Likewise, Steve Büttner’s bass and Hannes Müller’s drums subtly keep things in perfect time. Next up we enter a “Lighthouse”, where awesome music is being blasted.  The guitars have more of a distorted element in this track, combined with the melodic brilliance showcased in the previous song. This one has a very funky rhythm, featuring breakdowns and very rapid drumming. I’d say this track has a more Metalcore vibe, indicating that the group aren’t afraid to venture into several subgenres of Metal. Track number 3 is also quite distorted – “Raging Storm and Silence” again highlights the impressive work of the guitarists, whilst also proving the superb rhythmic efforts of the percussion and bass. Vocals are shouted over an awesome breakdown as the song draws to a close, again illustrating NINE TO FIVE ATTIDUDE’s desire for diversity. Last but definitely not least we have “This Ship Can’t Sink”. This summative track features the expertly-executed elements outlined above, and with both antagonistic distortion and serene melody.

Although consisting of a mere 4 tracks, this EP is exceptional. NINE TO FIVE ATTITUDE somehow has the perfect balance of heavy and soft, of aggression and gentleness. I have fallen in love with this band, and cannot wait to hear more from them in the future.
