Opium Warlords - We Meditate Under The Pussy In The Sky

Opium Warlords
We Meditate Under The Pussy In The Sky

OPIUM WARLORDS from Finland is the project of Sami Albert Hynninen (also known as Albert Witchfinder), previously bassist and vocalist of legendary doom metal band REVEREND BIZARRE (which are now defunct).

Now I know what you are thinking, but what OPIUM WARLORDS is offering,is quite diverse from what REVEREND BIZARRE used to do. Well, yeah on one hand “We Meditate Under The Pussy In The Sky” (epic title for an album) can be classified as doom metal, but it focuses more towards the drone subgenre of doom, sharing a few similarities with bands such as KHANATE and SUNN O))).

But, and that is the interesting thing about OPIUM WARLORDS, there are many different musical elements to their sound. From Black Metal oriented vocals, to quite nicely played clean parts and then back to huge drones (an example is “The Lament For The Builders of Khara Khoto) and weird effects (listen to the beginning of “Satan Knew My Secret Heart” and you will see what I mean). In this album four out of the five tracks are exactly what you would expect from a drone/doom band (maybe just with exception of some clean almost folky sounding parts in places, for example halfway through “This Wind Is A Gift From A Distant Friend”) with the exception of “Slippy”.

“Slippy” is a completely different beast, quite difficult to be described. It is a 12 minute long song that has probably every musical influence of Sami Albert Hynninen in it. From big drones, to a weird organ playing (the opening part of the song does sound quite ritualistic), synthesizers and effects, to an almost Black Metal based part (with a really bizarre riff by they way), to clean acoustic bits and then ending with some tribal (almost Latin-like??) drums. I do not really know what to make of it exactly, but I believe that as a whole someone might find it interesting. Personally I preferred the other four songs with just drone/doom parts and some clean bits, although that could also be due to the production that sounds good on the drone parts but seems to disintegrate in the more aggressive, faster and almost paranoid moments of the record.

I guess that this album will probably appeal to drone or avant-garde music fans, it might be a bit difficult for people that do not have much experience with these genres to appreciate it, but “We Meditate Under The Pussy In The Sky” is definitely not an album that someone can easily listen to.
