Origin - Entity

by Lior "Steinmetal" Stein at 28 April 2011, 10:28 PM

The suitable name that I can call this new ORIGIN release is a "Total technical mayhemic mess". I don't know if you have felt this before, but do you happen remember yourselves running away from a swarm of deadly bullets? Well, I haven't but if one of you guys did, the image and feels of this material produced a probable sense that might give a slight hint of what it is probably like. "Entity" is the Death Metal band's fifth release and it also officially welcomed yet another new member, vocalist Jason Keyser that was also known from the brutal SKINLESS fame, to the band. Furthermore, ORIGIN more or less kept the same line of utterly extreme music that kept them alive since 1997.

The reason that I called this release a "Total technical mayhemic mess" is plainly because it really is. With a huge load of respect to the ORIGIN members, which are absolutely masters on each and every role they hold and boy these guys has some crazy extreme lines, their new "Entity" has a got a lot of holes in it. Those particular holes weren't connected to professionalism or playing ability.

I think that the main is issue here is a lack of soul. The creation of good music, as I see it, is all about the soul or better said the content of the material at hand. Have no doubt about it; these guys did leave a large sum of impression on me, especially on some brutal machinery onslaughts as "Saliga", "Swarm" and "Consequence Of Solution". However, the rest of the material, and even some portions of the mentioned assaults, missed its purpose. A band can be technical as hell and we have some great references from both Death and Thrash worlds as NECROPHAGIST, ATHEIST, CARCASS and SADUS, yet most of those great bands had more than just technicality.

From where I saw it, ORIGIN took the deep tumble when they displayed their material as if it was an art showcase or an artist class or a "Bet You Can't Play This" sideshow. Almost the entire set of tracks lacked heart and depth. Whether the production is somewhat good or whether the guys are professionals, this is surely not enough. Even in Extreme Metal, and there are more than enough examples to the side of which I presented that will show exactly what I mean, there is heart in the music, even if it a dark one.

Don't get me wrong, "Entity" is no lame or a failed release. It will draw Metal fans that are bound by the feel of technical and progressive music. Nevertheless, I don't believe that technical abilities or a full-throttle fast way to hell, as it happened around here, should be the ultimate master call because those, as on this release, can hurt it more than help it.
