Overland - Break Away (CD)

Overland
Break Away
by Grigoris Chronis at 01 July 2008, 3:50 PM

Steve Overland's voice is a personal 'hot spot' the last twenty years. Mainly through FM's works but also with WILDLIFE, THE LADDER or SHADOWMAN, I always belied his voice fits the Rod Stewart case; the older he gets, the better he sounds. With this 2008 solo release as OVERLAND, I again was grabbed by the balls for his impressive singing but - on the other hand - I kinda got bored with some of the songs themselves.
Anders Rydholm provided most of the songwriting for Break Away and produced the album, with Steve penning all the lyrics themes. The album comes from the West Coast base to climb up to some AOR standards, with the sound being somehow faint. There are petite dynamics in half of the songlist, while the other half is based on fast tempos (like the same-titled one or After The Fire or Mad Mad World) and Steve's throat - in the tracks you'll be attracted to - has the potential to 'top' it all and provide some passionate singing his way.
Break Away could be described as an amalgam of every style Steve Overland's been up to the last twenty years or so. You can act as paying tribute to a big voice of 'melodic' Rock music by buying it (performance guaranteed, just check the lineup above). Still, if you want too much to 'ask' from this album, I do not know if you'll find some sufficient answer in your 'mailbox'.
