Panychida - Paganized (CD)

by Yiannis Dafopoulos at 20 March 2008, 4:54 PM

I kept on and on searching for some info about this band, but I never understood which the original line up is and who the guests are. Anyway, that's not our major concern right now. Before I start this review, I want to say a big sorry to Folter Records and the band for the delay in reviewing this album. So, let's move on with our journey through the dark…

Czech black metallers PANYCHIDA are here with their first ever official full-length album through the German label Folter Records. The band has a pretty strange discography, since its releases before this album are two demo CD's and a DVD! Anyway, Folter is one more Black Metal label added to my to check list and this album is a way to get in touch with the label's work until now, as well as PANYCHIDA's own style of Black Metal.

To tell you the truth, I expected to face a totally boring and uninspired Black Metal album, but the Czechs surprised me with their interesting folkish Black Metal and the singer's great grim vocals. The really nice blackened guitar melodies have been enriched with flutes from Arim and some nice samples from the band's guitarist Sinneral. I listened to the album pleasantly again and again and although it didn't amaze me, it managed to move my interest and make me search for more stuff about this band.

What I am about to say may sound a bit funny, but even though Black Metal is supposed to be evil, grim and cold as death, PANYCHIDA manage to create a warm and friendly atmosphere with their music. It is like when you listen to a Black Metal and you imagine the band full of spikes and corpsepaint, but this time you will imagine them without any corpsepaint on them. This time it is some friends playing some cool music while having fun. You have got to check them out mates!
