Paraphilia – Primordium Of Sinister Butchery

Paraphilia
Primordium Of Sinister Butchery

PARAPHILIA hailing from Portland, Oregon were formed in 2020 and they are a two-piece project. They play traditional US inspired Death Metal. “Primordium Of Sinister Butchery” is the band’s debut EP. It was mixed and mastered by SP in early 2020. The EP was released by Portugese label Brutal Cave Productions which have a number of Death Metal and Grindcore bands among their roster. “Primordium Of Sinister Butchery” has a length of about 16 minutes. No official video has been released so far.

PARAPHILIA follow the footsteps of a few US Death Metal legends with their sound. “Primordium Of Sinister Butchery” may only contain three own songs, but this is enough to get an idea of the general direction of this newly formed project regarding their music: it is classical Death Metal, mainly played mid-tempo with occasional changes in pace. “Pocks Of Frothing Rut” is a good example how to make a powerful, dark, and evil Death Metal track. Played at a head-banging, stomping rhythm for most of the time, it contains dark and aggressive guitar riffs, crunching bass lines, and lead guitar sequences that intensify the gloomy atmosphere. The vocals are brutal growls, mostly kept at the low end of the guttural range. There are a few outbursts of blast-beat attacks throughout the track. “Catalytic Heaving” starts faster than the opener, but is similar in sound. The track is mostly mid-tempo with some highly paced parts in-between. “Catalytic Heaving” is a bit more technical and the song structure has a bit more complexity. The lead guitars are vicious and dark.

Patterns Of Invigoration” is another mid-tempo track with a few changes in speed, texture, and rhythm. The track is dominated by the lead guitar sequences and it includes a short, but contributing lead guitar solo near the end of the song. “Patterns Of Invigoration” has a few chaotic instrumental parts during the middle part of the track, followed by a straight forward part with almost catchy rhythm and riffs. The final song “They Are The Children Of The Underworld” is a DEICIDE cover from one of my favorite albums “Once Upon The Cross”. Although it is not the most obvious cover choice, it fits nicely into the overall sound of the EP and the arrangement of the cover was made very well.

Primordium Of Sinister Butchery” is a good debut and indicates what we can expect from PARAPHILIA in the future. The band follows a no nonsense and honest approach to traditional Death Metal without any experimentation. Being a two-piece project at the moment, there might be a few changes and additions to the band in the future which may affect and develop their sound further. Although the EP is flawless, there are only three original songs which could and should have been a few more. The EP is well produced. With their debut, PARAPHILIA will have their share of Death Metal fans and it will be interesting to see how they develop further in the future.
