Pensees Nocturnes - Nom D'Une Pipe Award winner

Pensees Nocturnes
Nom D'Une Pipe
by CJ "Music God" Plain at 15 April 2013, 5:24 PM

Every few years, you come across that artist or band that utterly defies logic and makes it near impossible to define them. Recently, one of those artists, the French band, PENSEES NOCTURNES, crossed my desk for review. I was a bit intimidated at first due to this being a French artist and the lyrics being all in French, which I don't happen to speak a word of.

Almost immediately, my reaction was one of disbelief and confusion. It's not often I am at a loss for words when listening to music. In fact, there have only been a handful of times in my life that it's happened. This is definitely one of those times. I listened to this album a dozen times and still had no idea how to start this review.

This is Avant-Garde Black Metal at its weirdest, most twisted, and demented core. When you think you've heard it all, something like this comes along and completely destroys your centre of gravity by shattering every misconception you have held about music.

I searched my huge collection of music for something to compare this too and the only thing that was even close was DEVIL DOLL and even that isn't a perfect fit to describe this. My friend informed me that they were similar in nature to the band ARCTURUS though I am not familiar enough with that band to say if that is a true statement. I would venture to say it's a safe bet though as my friend is also very knowledgeable in this genre as he is a black metal musician himself.

The easiest way to describe this is to imagine TOM WAITS, DIZZY GILLESPIE, BORKNAGAR, and the clown from the movie IT forming a music collective. I honestly am still at a loss for a way to do this justice. This is truly one of the trippiest, over the top, intense albums I've ever heard in my life.

This is definitely not for the faint of heart, weak minded or closed minded listeners. Every aspect of this album will challenge your very existence. This is your nightmares set to sinister circus music. This is an absolute challenge to the status quo.

I'm not sure what the lyrics to these songs say but if they're even half as dark, sinister, and intense as the music, you're in for a hell of a ride.

If you like to play it safe, then avoid this at all costs. If you're willing to take a chance and challenge your brain with something unique, beautiful, and monstrous…then I absolutely can not recommend this highly enough.

Vaerohn, thank you for the chance to take this trip through the dark side.
