Powergame - Slaying Gods Award winner

Powergame
Slaying Gods
by Sarah Chebaro at 29 April 2022, 7:09 AM

Loud distorted guitars, dense bass and drum sounds and beautiful guitar solos are just a small part of what makes heavy metal, well heavy metal. POWERGAME formed in 2012, hailing from Bielefeld, Germany. The band was inspired by the classics such as JUDAS PRIEST and IRON MAIDEN. You can definitely hear it in their music. They already have two albums in their pockets. Their new album “Slaying Gods”, which came out in 2022 is filled with darkness, rage and power. Most heavy metal music is, no?

“Slaying Gods” the first track on their album opens the curtains to the energy the album holds. The track starts off with intense power chords with one guitar and more guitars following the same tune creating an orchestra, Another guitar comes in with a small solo that gives a battle zone feeling. In the end, it's 5 guitars creating a harmony with the drums. An image of a creature is placed in my mind. The song itself is rebellious bringing down a leader. Mätty’s vocals nail the high and low pitches for every part of the song. There is organized chaos in this song. You feel so much power and anger.

Want an apocalyptic song in your life? Track 6, “The End Of The World”, will feed that itch. It’s dark, creepy, sad and beautiful, what an oxymoron. A song that brings joy from the instrumental aspect, yet the lyrics themselves are depressing. I can picture the four horsemen slowly riding from a distance, as the drums introduce them to the world ending.  Fear and sorrow are accompanied by a harmonious guitar solo.

Are you having a bad day? Most people would want to listen to something that changes their mood, unless you want to feed that gloom and doom feeling. The last two tracks on the album are a combination, “Prelude to Suffering” and “The Chalice”. “Prelude to Suffering” is solely a beautiful guitar solo, purely peaceful. You can feel the pain, it beautiful continues into “The Chalice”. The drums in this track are so morbid and dark that they left a knot in my stomach. For a song to do that to me isn’t easy. “The Chalice” is a whole story on its own. It is 11:46 minutes long. I don’t believe I have ever encountered a song that long apart from “A Stairway to Heaven”. Also an absolute classic, but I won’t go there as that's a whole different feeling.

When I first heard the “Slaying Gods” album, I didn’t really know what to think. I was skeptical, but after a while, it really grew on me. POWERGAME has the experience as a heavy metal band and you can really see it in their music. As “Slaying Gods” is their third album, I am 100% sure the upcoming albums will blow my mind.
