Powers Court - Nine Kinds Of Hell (CD)

Powers Court
Nine Kinds Of Hell
by Makis Kirkos at 01 November 2001, 6:43 PM

An American power metal band, Power Court come to invade your psyche with their debut release Nine Kinds Of Hell, released by DragonHeart Records.
I could easily describe this album as a somber, dark and brooding collection of aggressive emotions, with excellent production, especially on the rhythm section- meaning the bass guitar and the drums.
Utterly operatic vocals, with a four and one half octave range (Yeah, they remind me of Tarja from Nightwish in a more smooth breathing voice) thoroughly enrapture us, the listeners, in a hypnotic embrace. Mystical, elegant, ethereal songwriting, combined with sonically aggressive guitars, mood altering keyboards and a captivating rhythm sections (the drummer rules), all these combined transcend the traditional boundaries of heavy metal.
Danie Powers is the guitarist and vocalist for the band, and besides laying down a very incisive collection of riffs, her vocals could be described as totally unique. It's hard to find any comparisons. There are shades of almost everything, from King Diamond's mid range, to a lilting soprano reminiscent of Loreena McKennitt (Yeah, remember her?), to high pitched power notes, to crushing Iced Earth guitar riffing.
Of course, I also have to mention the hellishly burning artwork on the digipack sleeve, which is another plus for this upcoming band. Give it a try and you won't be disappointed.
