Puppet Kings - Very Cool & Groovy

Puppet Kings
Very Cool & Groovy
by Justin "Witty City" Wittenmeier at 22 October 2017, 10:31 AM

This EP is aptly titled because it is indeed very cool and groovy!  Obviously, I wish it were longer of course because I think a full length of this sound would be a real treat.  However, the four tracks presented are rock solid. They are a hard rock band but they have a myriad of influences that shine through the music.  The first track, “Wanderlust,” really gives me vibes of FU MANCHU, especially with Tom Cochrane’s leads because they are melodic and catchy.  His riffs are head banging and never run short on ways to keep the groove flowing.

Neil Sawyer’s thick bass kicks off the second track, “Taurus,” before it explodes into some fast and tight thrash picking.  Harry Lehan’s drums are tight and loud, complimenting the songs as he holds them up with a weighty backbone. The verses and chorus recall better versions of anything you would hear on current hard rock American radio; All four songs, and even within the songs themselves, present different styles and sound different enough from each other to warrant another listen or two of the four tracks.  “Rich and White,” with its heavy and rolling riffs would make METALLICA or MEGADETH proud.  LEHANE’s galloping bass drums seal the deal for a short ride of a song that really brings the rock and roll.

Otherside,” is the best song here, made possible by the southern style guitar riffs that wouldn’t be out of placed on a PANTERA or LAMB OF GOD album.  The bass and guitar solos in the middle of the song are an additional highlight, showing the band can really bring their sound balls out without over doing it.  The song ends on a crushing note with amazing leads and devastating riffs. PUPPET KINGS have crafted a short but very sweet piece of music that really wets my appetite for a full length from them ASAP.
