Reboot the System - Demo 2020

Reboot the System
Demo 2020
by Justin "Witty City" Wittenmeier at 14 May 2020, 1:28 AM

REBOOT THE SYSTEM is the brainchild of up and coming mastermind Mattias ZimmermanREBOOT THE SYSTEM’s first release is a four-track demo that showcases a variety of styles in such a short amount of run time.  Death, thrash, black, and melodic metal are represented here.  It was a clever idea to have a different vocalist for each song as well.   I was told by the man himself that the drums were programmed but to be honest, if he hadn’t told me, I would had assumed a human was behind the kit.   Computerized drumming has come a long way but apparently he knows what he is doing.

The intro is melodic, ambient tones that gives off a mysterious, alien vibe.  It flows into the first proper song, the title track “Reboot The System.”  The song explodes outward almost immediately with some melodic but very fast riffing that drifts in and out of more traditional style death metal riffing.  The song’s speed slows down for some really nice riffs around the 2:34 mark that have a bit of an Egyptian flair to them.  As far as album openers go, this one is pretty decent, but it doesn’t have the dynamics of the remaining two tracks.

Drenched In My Fears,” is a much more melodic track but the wonderfully done clean vocals in the chorus give in a shade of Prog as well.  The guitar solo in the song’s later half is. exceptional as are the crunchy riffs behind it. “Iniquity,” has the best atmosphere of all the songs, sounding very blackened in its approach.  The vocals are energetic and go from blackened screams to death growls with the music changing styles to meet the vocalist head on.

It is so difficult to review a demo.  Obviously, what is heard may not be the exact finished product or what the ultimate endgame might be so it is hard to gauge how bad or good a band is based on such a format.  However, REBOOT THE SYSTEM clearly show a lot of promise and Mattias definitely knows his way around various styles.  I think the band might be better off if they stick with one versatile vocalist, if future releases are going to continue mixing genres. However, Mattias definitely has a vision for this band and I will be eagerly waiting to see where he takes REBOOT THE SYSTEM.
