Remete – Into Endless Night (Reissue)

Into Endless Night (Reissue)
by Dave "That Metal Guy" Campbell at 10 May 2022, 7:32 AM

“Into Endless Night” is the second offering from D that has been reissued via Northern Silence Productions. The four songs are quite a bit longer than the previous reissue. “Coiled Within” opens the album. It begins with clean guitars that give way to an earnest riff, as if an army of warriors are on the warpath again, having recently being defeated and decimated. They charge full speed ahead without regard for their own lives. The vocals are again done with two styles. Guitar melodies soar above the depressive Black Metal sound as you watch the soldiers get picked off one by one. Poetic justice.

“Ephemerality” opens with a hasty speed of ripping guitars, drums and vocals. Ephemeral means “to last only for a short time.” This could be interpreted as a symbol of your life. While the song mires in agony, you realize your life is but a fleeting moment in the grand scheme of things, and your existence is modest at best. “Stillness” begins with another fast-moving riff. Arden tones remind you of your perseverance…perhaps the best quality we have as humans. The drums begin to gallop as the song builds to a crescendo.

The title track closes the album. It’s a thirteen-minute ride through the expanse of your mind. Opening with clean guitars and a serene feeling, it segues into desperate sounding distorted guitars. The vocals sound like tortured wails, as the endless night continues on forever. The final few minutes revert back to clean guitars. The wait is over. The fact that the songs were longer than the previous reissue gives them the chance to expand, and I like the widened feeling. The tracks are cracked open and the hopeless melody grows. How beautiful we are in stillness and death.
