Saith - Herbalist

by Jacob Dawson at 04 February 2015, 9:39 AM

Wales is a country that has offered us a number of Metal bands over the years; DESECRATION, BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE, and LOSTPROPHETS to mention only a few. One of the latest to join this lineup is SAITH, a Progressive Metal project headed by Craig Davies, who has written and produced his debut EP “Herbalist”. Despite its short length, the songs it brings pack a gigantic punch and are a great announcement to the world as to what we can expect from a full-length release in the future.

Being a Progressive Metal EP, synth plays a huge part in the arrangement of the songs; every track includes it consistently throughout its duration as part of the song structure, and this works very well with the vocal styles. The reason I say styles is that each of the four tracks has a different Welsh vocalist as a guest, each contributing a different vocal range to the release. While the opening two tracks, “Re-Earthing” and “Revive” have clean, soaring vocals to them- working nicely with the fast tempo and powerful guitars- the final two tracks “Cure” and “Freethinker” seem to have grittier vocalists. The former has a much slower tempo than the rest of the EP, making the attitude in the vocals much more audible.

“Freethinker” is a good way to end the release, as despite it being less than three minutes long it also packs the hardest punch of the four songs. Ga Calford seems to have very similar vocals to DISTURBED’s David Draiman, and I say this as a compliment.

The main drawback to the EP is its obvious short length, as all in all, the four songs clock in at only 15 minutes. The defense for this is obvious; the darn thing is free! It’s not exactly like you’re not getting your money’s worth, as for a debut EP headed by one man, what you get here (once again, with no expense from you,) is a highly enjoyable collection of four songs which hopefully pave the way for a full-length release of a similar taste in the future.
