SednA – Last Sun

Last Sun
by Dave "That Metal Guy" Campbell at 19 September 2022, 1:33 PM

SEDNA is a four-piece Black Metal project born in 2009 in Italy. The sound is a mix of Post Black, Sludge and Doom Metal with ambient and drone parts that give the results of a sense of perdition and immersion. From furious blast-beats, passing through cadenced heavy parts, reaching to soft and expanded clean parts, the band tries to carry emotions and feelings in order to create an organic and alive experience of music. The new album contains two songs.

“Act I” is the first. It’s an eleven-minute opus. There is a slow build, of ominous notes, soft drum beats, and eerie background noise. Heavy bass notes provide much of the sound, along with hushed vocals…or are they? Your mind begins to play tricks on you as you stare into the dark, awoken by someone or something that isn’t there now. Nefarious voices approach in the background, getting closer to you. They seem angry. The sound dies and then the anger is right up in your face. The screams are enough to frighten you and turn your hair white. Once he is done raging, he quietly ducks back into the night.

“Act II” is nearly the same length. Fully awake now and half-scared to death, you ponder your next move. The tortured voices howl in the background once again, with a drum strike every now and again. The music slowly becomes more audible…harrowing and filthy. The raging screams are once again right in your very room, as the subject roars out with pain and desperation. The things you can see in the dark are enough to make you stomach turn. The ending screams tell you exactly what the subject has endured.

Indeed, this music was very much “alive” and could be felt. I illustrated the pictures as I saw it, but you can draw your own conclusions if you want to. The music was desperate, dark and brooding, and I could picture scenes of torture. They were bloody, brutal and the end result is that they made you feel worse than you have ever felt before. Good music can have this effect on you, and I will never forget where I was when I heard “Last Sun.”
