Septicflesh – Modern Primitive Award winner

Septicflesh
Modern Primitive

I have to say that it has been a while since I listened to SEPTICFLESH. I somehow lost track of them over the years. A lack of judgement that has thoroughly been corrected by having to listen to “Modern Primitive” in order to write a rather compelling review. And boy, this has just knocked me for six. I must have been mad to let these guys out of my site, as I absolutely adore “Modern Primitive”.

For those not in the know, SEPTICFLESH actually started in Athens in 1990. They went on for some thirteen years, but then held a pause from 2003 until 2007. They came back, and when you add it all up you realise this now makes them being a band for some 28 years. And there is no denying that it shows in the music they produce. At the heart of it all they are a Death Metal band, but they have additions that allows them to enhance the quality of their music tenfold. They add Orchestral and Cinematic sounds to their songs. What that does is add a number of layers that you need to get through to completely understand where SEPTICFLESH is coming from.

That is not a problem on “Modern Primitive”, as the Death Metal is quite accessible, the voices used perfect in sync with the music and the additions I mentioned are also placed and interwoven at exactly the right times and in the proper quantities. This just shows that after so many years, and on their twelfth full length album, these Greeks have all their ducks in exactly the right row. So yes, you will love this as a Death Metal fan, bit I predict that if you are rather smitten with the heavier Gothic metal bands you will also be able to enjoy this to the full extent.

Like I said, I lost track of SEPTICFLESH some years ago, but listening to “Modern Primitive” has brought back why I always liked them in a big way. So now, as you would expect, I will have to go out and find out what I have missed in the time lapsed. I suspect that I’m going to run into a lot of pleasant surprises. If you are ready for something as well, why not start your exploration of SEPTICFLESH in general with “Modern Primitive”. It will give you the perfect benchmark to start from.
