Sorrowful Land - ...Of Ruins

Sorrowful Land
...Of Ruins
by Dave "That Metal Guy" Campbell at 01 June 2017, 9:01 AM

SORROWFUL LAND is a one-man Ukrainian Doom Metal act, created in the spring of 2014 by Max Molodtsov, leader of the band EDENIAN. This is his debut under the moniker SORROWFUL LAND. “…Of Ruins” contains six tracks with a running time of just under 50 minutes. The opening song “A Reminiscence” has a slow, dreamy pace, with long passages of time between note/chord strikes, with both whispered vocals and Death vocals trading off for emotional accents. It is like watching time slowly eroding headstones in a cemetery at the twilight of a world long gone.  “Resquiescat” is a little shorter in length but still an impactful dirge that I would not recommending sorting out your feelings of inadequacy to alone in the dark.

“On Another’s Sorrow” is over ten minutes in length. A mist settles onto the path you are walking on through the night forest, and the once bright comforting yellow glow of the moon grows dark from passing clouds. You are now alone with your feelings of grief and loss. It is so poignant you feel a loss of the track of time. “…Of Ruins” opens what sounds like waves crashing softly on the shore. A solitary guitar provides much of the sound at first, with spoken words of despondence. The Death vocals are absolutely anguished, like hearing the screams of a man being tortured from within.

“In The Time Of Tyrants” has a great piano line, from the decayed fingers of a skeleton, playing alone in once great venue that has long since crumbled with the passage of time. “Echoes Of Endless Silence” closes the six-track album. It’s a lumbering exercise in deep hopelessness, leaving you with nothing to care for. Marvelously depressing, “…Of Ruins” will wilt all the flowers in the meadow, and steal hope from the world. There is beauty here at every turn, hidden in secret chambers that only your deepest fears and losses can unlock. Max has done a splendid job of interpreting the Funeral Doom genre here, with a sound that can reach the deepest recesses of your buried emotions.
