Soulhealer - Chasing The Dream

Chasing The Dream
by Michael "MettleAngel" Francisco at 02 May 2013, 1:58 PM

The smoke has cleared, and the mirror's truth is unveiled. Finally free and working with Pure Legend, the Finnish kings of bullet alley promise to never turn their back on you. SOULHEALER will ensnare you in their web of lionized dreams, chasing your soul, healing you with enticing melodies and passionate, salient poetry. With these mellisonant and sturdy little wares, they prepare to unleash their wicked, moody sophomore release. Following their destiny and the qualities of time, these young and hungry souls have created a noble Power Metal effort, and refuse to look back. Fans of TWILIGHT GUARDIANS, MASQUERAGE, PRETTY MAIDS, ROUGH SILK, etc. will want to taste, and not waste their delicious inception, once the die is cast.

This is surprisingly a good album with well-written songs, uplifting lyrics, and accomplished musicianship. The wistful opener “Wicked Moon” is quite catchy and reminds me of CELESTY or early SONATA ARTCICA. The title track and “Finally Free” evoke the sound of the earlier STRATOVARIUS material, as well as DESTINY or MIDNIGHT SUN. With TIMO TOLKKI's AVALON imitating AVANTASIA and employing some of the same vocal talent, fans of this style will enjoy an upbeat song like “Done For Good” or “Into The Fire”. “Plague-House Puppet Show by the now defunct TWILIGHTNING would serve as another noteworthy reference.

Although there are no female vocals present with SOULHEALER, they will appeal to NIGHTWISH and TAROT readers, as well. Jori sings with a clear and distinct presence which reminds me of earlier THUNDERSTONE or Norway's THUNDERBOLT, and even perhaps STALAS & SO. The tithing tease of “Ties of Time” has a circuitous vibe, and a crisp sound with a mercurial solo. Think about “Walk The Earth” by SILENT FORCE. The closer “Smoke And Mirrors” is more of a galloping epic quandary and honors the classic SAVATAGE tradition with a hint of TARAXACUM or THEOCRACY.

Overall, for a band that I just blindly discovered, I will faithfully promote them as the wheels roll on until they are done for good.
