Stench Collector - Effluvatorium Du Jour

Stench Collector
Effluvatorium Du Jour

As usual, it must be said that Death Metal wasn’t born in the USA, as many fans and writers think. In reality, as everyone was trying to be as extreme and nasty as the others, names as HELLHAMMER created a seminal form of music that could be stated as Death Metal on its embryonic state, and VENOM helped to pave the way for the genre, as the early releases of SODOM, DESTRUCTION and KREATOR helped to warm up things. But no one is denying that MANTAS, DEATH, MASTER, MASSACRE and POSSESSED aren’t important as well. The idea behind this short explanation is that fame should be shared between these names. And the North American duet STENCH COLLECTOR inherited the spirit of the creators, as can be heard on their first EP, “Effluvatorium Du Jour”.

Their work is a primordial form of Death Metal that was usual on North American School between the late years of the 80’s and on the early days of the 90’s. It’s putrid, raw and nasty, with fast parts contrasting with slow moments, inspired on names as DECEASED, CANNIBAL CORPSE, MORTICIAN and others, but having in mind that, even on this early stage, their musical work shows potential. Matt Hipp and Mikey Bullister worked on the recording, leaving to Andreas Linnemann the responsibility of mixing and mastering the five songs of the EP. And their work resulted in something crude and nasty as many fans would love. But it could be better defined and clean in some aspects, because the sensation that there’s a ‘smoke cloud’ over their songs is clear.

“Welcome to the Effluviatorium” is just a horror-like intro that precedes “Gutworm”, a traditional Death Metal song with nasty guitar riffs and grunts on a song with slow tempos as “Bile Container” is as well (although there are fast parts on this one). “Eye Socket Maggots” and “Carrion Cellar” are shorter songs that use a more energetic and fast approach, using and abusing of some Death Metal hooks. A good job for a first coming, but improvements must be done.

For now, STENCH COLLECTOR shows itself as a promising name, but “Effluvatorium Du Jour” is a release that shows to the listeners that great things can be expected from these guys.
