Syrinx - Crystal Cliffs (CD)

Syrinx
Crystal Cliffs
by Yiannis Mitsakos at 15 February 2001, 8:38 PM

Two words stroke my mind after the first 20 of playing this CD… Dream Theater. I have to admit than when I received the promo and looked at the inlay I expected to listen to the usual stuff that may be fun to listen to one or two times but then off to the shelf it goes.

I was pleasently surprised that the album is really interesting, at least to Dream Theater fans. The ones who find DT boring won't like this album either. But the rest who like prog metal, especially this kind of prog, will appreciate the guys' effort. The music is really good and sometimes it feels like listening to Images & Words, especially on some long solos. Even the vocals are on the same scale.

In general Syrinx try to sound like DT while keeping their own style. Is that an easy task? No, since DT have some of the best musicians around, capable for anything that requires a musical instrument. Syrinx have done a really good work doing something similar but not a blind copy of the masters of prog metal. Still they have to work on their originality, they have already demonstrated they can play damn good music, and they are hard to get bored of.

Definately one worth checking out for DT fans. If you belong to the other side, you can either change your mind or keep away. Simple as that :)
