The Black Sorcery - And The Beast Spake Death From Above

The Black Sorcery
And The Beast Spake Death From Above
by Marcos "Big Daddy" Garcia at 01 June 2018, 6:46 AM

An old Metalhead like me has a vast experience in Metal, and saw many musical revolutions appear and go into the sands of time. This is the main reason we deny the copying processes that many bands insist on doing, and to release an album copying others work is a loss of time to me and my comrades Metalheads from the past. And don’t get me wrong, but the Canadian quintet THE BLACK SORCERY needs to work on rehearsals, and even question their ways, because “And the Beast Spake Death from Above” is a fine example of an album that is a loss of time.

Sorry to be frank, but I know BEHERIT, BLASPHEMY, MYSTIFIER, VULCANO and SARCÓFAGO’s works. I already have some albums from them, so I don’t need another band in the same way, doing the very same thing. This album shows a Black/Death Metal that reminds the ancients I named above, as dirty and nasty as them, but as said: I already know them, and have my copies from some of their works, and although these Canadian guys are not copying, they aren’t doing it on their own. It’s like they’re listening to these ancient bands as they write their songs, and it’s annoying!

The sound quality is what we could expect: dirty and truly raw to the extreme. Of course some bands use this same crude way, to be as aggressive and nasty as they can, but here seems to be more a fruit of their musical influences than something that they have chosen by themselves. And there are moments when things are so putrid that the music becomes a fuzzy mass of sound, like on “Frost Veined”. It’s not to a matter of recording in a raw or in a clear way, but a matter to make your music comprehensible.

We can hear that they have talent in this way, as songs as “Traitor Bomb Threat”, “Seizures” (this one shows some slow good tempos), some Old School Death Metal parts of “Circling the Drain”, the sharp guitar riffs of “Splintered Glass Arsenal” and of “Incursion” are proof of a band that has musical talent, but needs to improve. A band that needs a producer to show them the benefits to use a clearer sound, that aggressiveness and to have an organic sound don’t me that you must use putrid tunes and recording! They have to improve a lot, as a band, and let’s hope that THE BLACK SORCERY can hear the experience voice, not the “true headbangers” voices (as such a thing existed, and was not a fallacy created for the infant fools).
