The Natural Disasters - Tormenta

The Natural Disasters
by John Foley at 27 July 2020, 4:06 AM

THE NATURAL DISASTERS is the brain child of multi-instrumentalist Alioscha Brito-Egaña from Copenhagen, Denmark and this is the new release titled Tormenta which was released back in May 2020. The project was founded back in 2017 and with this release it has vocalists Anna Sharifi, Trine Trash, Tomas Karlsbjerg who have worked on previous projects. This is the works of dark goth rock mixed with a hint of post punk.

So to kick things off we have the album opener “Where’s the Thunder” which starts off a very goth feel. Musically it has a very heavy tone to it and is accompanied with a really nice guitar solo. Next up we get “The Wrong Way” which in my opinion has an intro with a very similar sounding to something you would find on a QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE album and the track also features some very haunting sounding vocals. “Mountain of Despair” is a slightly more aggressive in tone and approach. Unlike the previous two songs, this one features male vocals and with this tracks feel it really lets the instrumentation do all the talking. “WLYN” is next and is a pretty cool track with a slight dark wave vibe.

“Lay Down” has this very eerie sounding intro but hooks you in at the same time. It is a very slow paced song with a very dark but romantic lyrical theme. The next song, “Without Shelter”, starts off with a very fast paced rhythm section but with a very slow paced clean guitar sound going over it. The guitar playing really picks up for the chorus and features a slight end of days feel. “The Storm is Kind” is a very bass heavy song with a bit of a doom vibe from the start. It features a small guitar melody that helps carry the song in parts. This I must say is a really good song and a high light on this album.  After this the album closes with “After the Storm”. It serves as an instrumental piano ballad but then about half way through we get this guitar part that sort of gently places itself over the piano medley whereas with the mix helps make both instruments really complement each other.

Tormenta is  quite dark yet beautiful at times. Present are some very heavy tones with a real gothic rock n roll style with a feeling shrouded in darkness. At times it can be hard to compare to another artist or band  but I did get reminded at times of SISTERS OF MERCY.
