The Old Dead Tree - The End Award winner

The Old Dead Tree
The End
by Laura Glover at 06 January 2020, 11:02 PM

What a sad thing to write a review on a “farewell release”. I am always hopeful of more music from the bands I write about. From one artist to many others, I love the process. Watching artistic growth is a beautiful thing. Maybe, in this case, this ending will inspire individual new beginnings for this band. This EP was actually written a long time ago, in 1999; just days before the tragic suicide of former drummer Frédéric Guillemot. THE OLD DEAD TREE stopped producing music after some issues with shifting band members and so on. However, the band decided to get together one last time and commemorate their lost friend from 20 years past. My condolences for the band’s loss, suicide is such a terrible thing. So, to all you fans of THE OLD DEAD TREE, get your hands on a hard copy of this EP, “The End”, fast. There is only 1000 in existence worldwide.

Sorry” - The piano instantly made me fall in love with this song. The guitar that follows absolutely drives this song to sound amazing. I am so sad that this is this bands last hurrah! This is a soft and introspective sounding song. Yet, still has its rises to metal from its soft valleys. “Someone Should Know (The Truth)” - This is an emotionally sung song whose intent is easily felt. Such a soulful and heartfelt vibe with relateable lyrics. Set to music you can still bang your head to.

Kids” - With a faster introduction, the beat picks up a bit in this song. Still very melodic in nature, the vocals in this song are reminiscent of 90’s rock. My most favorite decade that I have had the pleasure of experiencing, I was a teenager and spent many hours “rocking out”. This is the time frame that I developed my current passion for music. I dig the 90’s vibe of this song. “The End… Again” -  A soft cloud of sound surround you, like being in a hammock of audio love. This is the end… again. As I mentioned before, THE OLD DEAD TREE stopped producing music for some time and only got together to commemorate their friend. This is a good-bye to him as well as a farewell to us as a whole.

This album hits me in a very personal way, as I’ve also lost several friends to the horrendous disease that is depression. I believe once you release your intent unto the world, it lands where it is supposed to. To the band, I deeply feel your friend heard your good-bye. I honor your farewell EP and I thank you for even taking the time to say good-bye to the people. Maybe we will hear from again someday…eh… maybe???!
