The Spirit - Sounds from the Vortex Award winner

The Spirit
Sounds from the Vortex
by Clarissa "Wulf" Wright at 13 November 2017, 11:55 AM

THE SPIRIT is a newly emerged black/death metal band, from Saarbrücken, Germany, first born in the year of 2015. Here we have their debut album “Sounds From the Vortex” which was unleashed into the world on the 13th of October this year. It has been said this album expresses the dark passions of the musicians, as THE SPIRIT comments “we captured the fire that burns in us to transform it into the Sounds from the Vortex”.

The first track “Sounds from the Vortex” is a short introduction with a slow distortion of guitars, and tom-drum rumblings. It took me some time to get into it at this point, not knowing what to expect next. In the second track I was immediately engaged as “Cosmic Fear” snapped in with fast paced distorted guitars and drums. It wasn’t until the vocals dropped in that I got really into it. Strong and raspy, the higher pitch of the vocals contrasts against the bands’ heavy, and energetic instruments.

“The Clouds of Damnation” blew me away with its pounding storms of creativity. Half-way through, we have a guitar solo that become faster and more intensely vibrant. Afterwards, the pace slows, until guitars swoosh in like a hunting eagle in the air. “Cross the Bridge to Eternity” begins with a clean guitar intro, before strands of altering tremolo guitar styles interweave and pull the momentum forth. This is a diverse song that ends with an inconclusive feel, perhaps like the infinite vortex the band speaks of! “Fields of the Unknown” is the final track, beginning with marching beats of the drums that change into hard hitting blast-beats, against riffs that descend from high.

THE SPIRIT unleashed inner fire in “Sounds From the Vortex”. To me, I hear expressions of emptiness and yearning from all parts of the music. The vocals sound crisp and powerful, while the instruments are experimentally varied, yet retain a bold heaviness. I find these songs to be bravely experimental and well produced.
