TRIAGONE is an Extreme Metal quintet based in Brussels, Belgium. Their promo material states they “offer Brutal Technical Death Metal with a fresh and authentic interpretation, presentation and vision.” I wondered, what does that actually mean? Well, for one, TRIAGONE is fronted by dual vocalists: Lorena Moraes and Lou-Indigo Caspar. Caspar also covers lead guitar, so some double duty there. They specialize in Technical Death, a fairly tight niche in the subgenre of Death Metal. What really makes them unique, though, is their choice of language—a mix of ancient Greek/Latin and modern Latin/Germanic languages. You usually only get those flavors in Black or Folk Metal or with bands that are so legit they just don’t give a fuck. On February 10, 2023 this legit Technical Death Metal band is set to release their debut EP, “Sem Papyrvs.”

TRIAGONE doesn’t skimp with “Sem Papyrvs.” It is a long EP with six unrelenting tracks that clock out at about twenty-seven minutes. Sonically, from the first chord to the runaway blast beats to the lightening quick vocal punches, this album never lets up. And keep in mind, three of these tracks run for over five minutes. So not only relentless but indefatigable as well. Okay, there is the last minute of track five where we get an acoustic outro, but that adds more a neoclassical intonation than a reprieve from the aggro. Also on that front is track four, “Nvlla Regvle Sine Exception,” which features a stellar guitar solo in homage to Yngwie Malmsteen.

Lyrically, you got it, it’s all Latin to me—or in the case of the opening track, “Novvs Ordo Seclorvm,” French. Production-wise, the album is little thin with less layered depth than one would hope . . . but then again, debut album and no label support, so not so unexpected. It does give the album a raw feel . . . and I’d much prefer an under-produced album than an over-produced album any day.

Standout tracks include the longest track, “Imperivm In Imperio,” for its incredible solos and driving bass, and the shortest track, “De Deata Vita,” which showcases the lethal rhythm of Leonard Ivanciu (bass) and Lorenzo Vissol (drums).

All in all, on “Sem Papyrvs” TRIAGONE serves up the carnage of a Death Metal outfit tempered with the classic, melodic finesse of Tech Metal. A nice combo. Though the band doesn’t yet have a label, they are aggressively supporting the album with a steady release of videos. A quick search on YouTube will yield a hoard of great coverage. A solid debut.
