Tusk - Fear EP

by H.P. Buttcraft at 14 December 2015, 12:31 PM

Australian Death Metal monsters TUSK debut their next release since their 2013 EP, simply titled “Fear”. This three song EP delivers three very heavy and very brutal tracks, all brand new songs to the band’s repertoire.

The song “Trojan” really gets into your face with the black metal guitars and drums. But the vocals are very reminiscent of THE RED CHORD and this song even sounds like the band’s single “Ant Man”. Geoff Shumack’s versatile and powerful voice brings a very extreme edge to the high-octane strings and drums.

On the song “Colonized Dystopia”, the band goes for a much more synthetic style and tone than the other two songs on this EP. There is a lot of Djenting going on here and lots of studio magic layered over the song to give it a cybernetic feel. Although the song is powerful and dark, it doesn’t really fit too well with the other two songs on “Fear”.

I am confused at what is preventing this band from producing more songs. Possibly the creativity is stunted? After being together since 2010, TUSK has only recorded a total of eight songs. That’s barely more than half an hour of material. I think there is a lot of potential for this band but to really give a good feel for them, I wouldn’t say the three songs on “Fear” delivered enough for me to get a good feeling for TUSK.

I am passing a mediocre rating along with this one. It wasn’t enough to grab me but I am hesitant to pass judgement on TUSK. “Fear” was better than many mediocre EP’s I’ve come across before but I still came out the that short experience feeling underwhelmed.
