Tyfon's Doom - Emperor's Path Award winner

Tyfon's Doom
Emperor's Path
by Kyle Scott at 31 January 2018, 12:33 PM

Here’s a Metal riddle for you all; “I sing like Doom and I play like Death at the speed of Thrash. What am I?”. The answer is TYFON’S DOOM. The intro riff to “Tyrant’s Sceptre” has classic Death Metal all over it, but Tommy Varsala’s vocals are clearly Stoner inspired. I would have pegged them for Doom if the tempo wasn’t so close to Thrash. Your brain desperately wants to try and compare them to any specific sub-genre; but TYFON’S DOOM refuses to be pigeon-holed.

There’s not a lot of information available on these guys, sadly. The most I could find out about them is that they are from Tampere, Finland, they’ve been around since 2013, the name comes from a Greek god, and the whole band is comprised of a single dude playing every part. Enigmatics aside, TYFON’S DOOM has no problem making sure you’re listening; “The Hidden Hand” resonates a Classic Rock vibe, “Sea of Life” sounds like Punk and Stoner had a beautiful, bass-riddled baby, and “Beyond Treason” is just one maddening drumline after the next.

It’s probably by this point where your brain stops trying to fit TYFON’S DOOM into a box and just enjoys listening. My favorite track has to be “The Rider from Abandoned Town”, with actual freakin’ cowbell in it, because why the hell not at this point? Yes, the song gives off a huge BLUE OYSTER CULT vibe, with acoustics and bass line with just a hint of fuzz, but that’s far from a bad thing. It’s nice to have a change of pace like that midway through the album. TYFON’S DOOM is clearly not conventional by any means. They may be almost unknown, but they aren’t afraid to stand outside the lines and if you love music that defies sub-genre boundaries, then check them out!
