TYRANNIC is a Blackened Doom Metal band from Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
“Mortuus Decadence” is the band’s second full length album, released by
Iron Bonehead Productions on November 19, 2021.
Black Metal is a very interesting subgenre to me. On its own, it’s very good. When you fuse it with other Metal subgenres, however, that’s when things get
really interesting. Something about Black Metal’s evil, atmospheric vibe melds well with the other subgenres of Extreme Metal, and this group’s music is no exception. Vocally,
R combines the piercing shriek of
“Reign in Blood”-era
Tom Araya, the choral-inspired clean vocals of
MAYHEM’s
Attila Csihar, and the raw grunt of the legendary
Tom G. Warrior.
J also seems to take inspiration from the
CELTIC FROST front man/guitarist, as his riffs are very reminiscent of the pioneering work done on
HELLHAMMER’s
“Apocalyptic Raids.”One thing that’s kind of strange about this record, though, is the order of the track listing itself. Perhaps someone at the label made a mistake, or perhaps it was the band’s intention, but usually, a song with the title
“Introduction” starts the record rather than finishing it. Additionally, I would’ve most likely spread out the longest tracks rather than having them back to back. But, that’s just me.
Some highlights from this album include
“Singe of Orgiastic Waste,” which is one of the faster songs on this record;
“Night Plague Manifest,” which has a beautiful,
OPETH-like clean passage towards the end of the tune; and the title track, which makes brilliant use of atmospheric elements while remaining heavy.
Overall, I really dig this record. If
SAINT VITUS had a child with
DARKTHRONE, you would get
TYRANNIC. The music is raw, diabolical and slow – just how I like it. Again, the order of the songs felt a little disjointed, but I’m willing to look past that.
