U-Turn - Black Leather And Chromes

U-Turn
Black Leather And Chromes
by Daniel Fox at 17 July 2014, 9:25 PM

U-TURN is a brand new French band conversely made up of a solid stock of veteran musicians, coming together in a reimagining of the classic sound of 70's Hard Rock. "Black Leather & Chromes" should be a dead giveaway as to the nature of the music; driving, some-what Blues-oriented and highly Southern-influenced Hard rock, with a French twist; a number of the songs contain French lyrics.

The title track involves typical 'biker rock' music, with infectiously catchy vocal lines, and simplistic-yet-earnest guitar riffs. Confused as to why such a track would be over 6 minutes on, the majority of the second half is filled to the brim with emotive, fuzzy and flashy guitar solos. "Ecorché vif" is… Essentially the same track, but with French lyrics, and minor differences in vocal delivery style. Like the vocals, the guitar work is once again effective in the solos, but I am starting to get the feeling that much of this album is somewhat samey.

"Deep Night Ride" presented a welcomed change of pace and arrangement, with a booming, bass-oriented arrangement with a little more of a rebellious, wonderlust atmosphere evoked by the chord progressions and timbres. It is noticeably more Bluesy than the other pieces, with a significantly prominent, classic MOTÖRHEAD vibe. Even the vocals provide a more tangible colouration. "Veterans" is a quaintly poetic piece that is centred around wistful acoustic guitars and beautifully emotive clean leads; I would even go as far as looking towards a Country-Rock vibe, but eventually the track picks up the pace in a dramatic switch around and kicks the whiskey bottle with a powerful encore.

Unfortunate for those who feed off initial impressions, the first half of the album is not as good as the remainder, with tracks that are 'too' similar to each other. However, with intriguing interjections from other styles and genres, ranging from Country and Blues to Pop Rock, its listen ability is kept afloat.
