Uburen - Withered Roots

Withered Roots
by Tuoksu Holopainen at 05 September 2014, 7:47 PM

UBUREN's style, though labeled as Viking Metal, has a great Black Metal prevalence. Hailing from Norway, the trio managed to create a somewhat "traditional" record yet with a fresh vibe. The title  and the cover artwork of the album, as well as the band's image, conspiciously suggest the Viking/Folk inluence. "Withered Roots" is the band's debut album, released independently.

Despite being deeply-rooted into the ground of Norwegian Black Metal, UBUREN introduces more melodic guitars, cleaner production and an impressive alteration of three or more different vocal styles. Although it's nothing like what "Modern Viking Metal" fans would expect, this obviously sounds nothing lik TYR and their likes who play an amalgam of Melodic Metal and Folk Metal. Surprisingly, the album seems to only get better the longer you listen to it. One of the main things that can keep you hooked is variety of the vocals. Impeccable growls then demonic shrieks then softly spoken words and clean vocals. The guitar work is pretty compelling a little too Melodic for an album of the genre, touching on the boundaries of DISSECTION and THULCANDRA, who easily can bear the label of "Melodic Death Metal."

What UBUREN succeeded at with this album was perfectly blending the typical Norse proud and anthemic feeling, with the brutality of Black Metal and Death Metal within a homogenous Melodic blend while still conveying emotions.
