Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats - Blood Lust Award winner

Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats
Blood Lust

Why the hell do bands’ releases have to get reviewed ages (ok maybe ages equals one year) after the initial release of their album? Why do we have to share the knowledge one year later. Why do I have to tell you so late that this band kicks serious ass? My faith in the music legacy of the island of Albion has just been restored. UNCLE ACID & THE DEADBEATS deliver with “Blood Lust” a fantastic psychedelic record, a warp-hole that sucks you directly back to the good old music of 60s and 70s. And while Uncle Acid’s voice sounds so vintage and trippy with all those effects the stories that unfold in those songs are of horror, macabre and witchery heavily based on the “Hammer Horror” films that were produced in United Kingdom between 1950 and 1970.

In the current version there is the original record that was recorded back then plus an additional song as a bonus. “Blood Lust” is the second record of the band after “Vol 1.”. The music reminds heavily of BLACK SABBATH and PENTAGRAM music wise while the vocals tend towards bands like GANDALF. “Blood Lust” starts with the epic “I’ll Cut You Down” and sets the standards for the whole record. A simple riff that sticks in your head, trippy vocals and a deadbeat tempo that could be a soundtrack to the opening of any gothic horror movie of that age. “Death’s Door” and “Over And Over Again” riffs are so SABBATH the essence that I am wondering if Tony Iommi is behind this band. But my favorite track - and probably the best of the record - comes two tracks after this; “13 Candles” combines catchy chorus, great guitar riffs and great Hammond organ melodies it sticks to your head like a hammer and it reflects everything that this band is delivering. The record is conceptual and tells the story of a drug addict and sadistic killer who is performing satanic rituals sacrificing women.

The sound of the record of course is as vintage like as it can get recorded on an 8 track channel while the band uses instruments which they have acquired from old pawn shops. Used in proper analogy all those elements help the band to achieve an original 70s sound and you can’t actually tell if the record was recorded forty years ago or in 2011. Uncle Acid is the main treat of the band as his songwriting, his bombastic riffs and acidic vocals set the highest standards for the record. He is backed up by a tight as hell rhythm section which nails each song perfectly. The members’ identities however are obscured under a veil of mystery which adds to the mysticism of the coven. UNCLE ACID & THE DEADBEATS is a very special band and I definitely and absolutely recommend it to all of you who cherish vintage stuff and horror stories and occult music.
