Vardan - Between The Fog And Shadows

Between The Fog And Shadows

Catania, Italy based Black Metal solo project, VARDAN, has released a new full-length album called “Between The Fog and Shadows”. It’s one of his eight (!!!) full-length albums he has already released this year. I don’t know where he gets his creativity but it seems like he has found an inexhaustible source for it. The album contains three songs, with lengths between eleven and nineteen minutes.

The intro of the first song, which is the title song called “Between The Fog And Shadows”, starts promising, with a slow but prominent drumbeat and a distorted guitar riff. A distorted voice also kicks in after some time and it carries on like it begins for a while, but it’s chill to listen to. Actually, it drags on so long that it seems the whole song is like this. And it is. Until the vocals come back near the end. I don’t really know why, but it doesn’t seem to bother me.

“Solitary Death of a Forest Spirit” is the second effort on this album. It starts off a lot like “Between The Fog and Shadows”, with a slow drumbeat and a little distorted guitar riff in the background and a clean one that’s more prominent. This one changes a bit throughout though, be it not of pace or speed, but in volume. His vocals stay the same, as well. Then, after six minutes, the distortion slowly starts to take hold over the rest of the music. I actually hear a lot of Post Rock elements for an artist who plays Black Metal. This one doesn’t change that much either, but it’s still an okay sound and it doesn’t become boring.

“Of Dead Dreams Through Funeral Eyes” is more of the same, which can’t come as a surprise. It’s more about atmosphere than musical excellence, but I guess that’s what Black Metal is all about.
