Vardan – Verses From Ancient Times Award winner

Verses From Ancient Times
by Marcos "Big Daddy" Garcia at 02 April 2015, 2:24 AM

One of the greatest debates into Metal scene is related with bands that change their musical styles after creating a faithful legion of fans. Well, to be honest to you, this isn’t a new matter at all, for since long times, many bands changed their musicality for unanswered reasons (being METALLICA one of the most famous bands to change their musical direction). But there are that ones that change in a way that you can’t really see the alterations. Inside extreme Metal, it’s not so difficult to see this event occurring. And to our happiness, VARDAN, the Italian one man band, shows what is to change, but keeping the identity with “Verses from Ancient Times”.

VARDAN, the musician, released three albums only this year (he is a very creative guy, we must say), and here, he has a more traditional black metal insight, differently from what "Big Daddy" here heard on “The Night, The Loneliness”, that was in a more DSBM way. But please, don’t get the wrong idea: even being this way, the band’s personality is the very same, with harsh shrieked vocals, good and cold guitar riffs, and strong and heavy rhythmic basis. And these elements are gathered together in a form that some time is fast (but not as fast as some bands like earlier IMMORTAL albums, please), sometimes more darkened and atmospheric, but always very good, even having some very long songs on this album.

The sound production is the same we are used to hear from the band: raw and funereal, but with clearness enough to understand what the instruments are doing. It’s not a confused and chaotic sound mass, but black metal in the SWOBM in its best form.

The feeling on this album is the very same you can feel on albums like “Under a Funeral Moon” or “Det Som Engang Var”, the same feeling on “anti-esthetics” sound, that music that makes chills runs through your spine. Of course all the songs are very good, but the better ones are “III” with its more climatic and darkened feeling, and “IV”, a more harsh and aggressive song.

Of course VARDAN has more to say and to show, but on “Verses from Ancient Times”, he has done an excellent work.
