Venomous Maximus - Beg Upon The Light Award winner

Venomous Maximus
Beg Upon The Light
by CJ "Music God" Plain at 21 February 2013, 12:36 PM

After listening to this the first time, I wasn't really sure what to make of “Beg Upon The Light.” My first thought was how heavy this was. This was one of those CD's that had everything cranked to 12 on the dial. The guitars are on full blast and the rhythm section here just thunders along like a 50 ton train.

After a few more listens, I heard the MASTODON, PENTAGRAM, and SAINT VITUS influences in their sound. This is just a beast of a record. This is one heavy, foreboding, and fabulously retro sounding slab of tunes in all the good ways.

I have to admit that this has definitely grown on me the more I've listened to it. In many ways, the vocal approach of Gregg Higgins reminds me of the great Jim Morrison in that he has this way of delivering his powerful words in a half spoken, half howled style. You can just picture this band surrounded by a bonfire, deep in the swamp under a full moon.

This is what DANZIG wishes he could be.
