Voice Of Ruin - Morning Wood Award winner

Voice Of Ruin
Morning Wood
by Charlotte Whittingham at 14 May 2014, 8:14 PM

Four years as a reviewer I thought I had heard it all; Pirate Metal, Viking Metal, Battle Metal etc. Whilst checking out VOICE OF RUIN the words farmer and Metal appeared in the same sentence and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t intrigued or amused.

The opening track “Welcome To The Stud Farm” entices you in immediately meaning that it had done its job well. When searching them on Facebook their listed genre was Horny Farmer Metal; when listening to their sound this is reinforced by the lyrics in their songs where they write about riding a tractor, something I thought I would never hear from a Metal band. This can be heard in songs such as “Through The Machete”, “Sex For Free” and my personal favourite on the album “Viois Désinvoltes”.

Speaking of the track “Viois Désinvoltes” the reason it’s my personal favourite is because it’s a little bit different to the other tracks in terms of vocals. The clean backing vocals almost give it a RAMMSTIEN effect.

A lot of the tracks will certainly see well at live shows too. For example “Sex For Free” has a chorus that fans and Metalheads will happily shout back and sing along to. Other tracks that will be welcomed with open arms will be “Day Of Rage” and “Through The Machete” will cause the most brutal of mosh pits.

I also ought to praise guitarists Martin Peikert and Nils Horngacher for their excellent skills for their original, melodic riffs that toned down the aggression. “Dirty” allowed the listener one last mosh before marking the end of a more than successful album.

“Morning Wood” certainly gave off some great vibes, I have no idea what the Swiss farmers from VOICE OF RUIN do to charm their audiences but whatever it is I advice they carry on as the charm certainly worked.
