Vous Autres – Sel de Pierre

Vous Autres
Sel de Pierre
by Dave "That Metal Guy" Campbell at 16 September 2020, 11:08 AM

VOUS AUTRES is a two-headed Post Metal/Black Metal band hailing from Nantes, France. As enigmatic as it gets, the duo creates a dark, ambient, and tormented sound, blended into the everlasting retrieval of what seems forever lost to human's inherent evil. “Sel de Pierre” contains six tracks.

“Onde” leads off the album; a nine-minute beast. Dark, heavy tones lead the sound here, as if the world was slowly swallowed in black. The sound is almost Doomy in nature, and the vocals are somewhat muted screams. It lumbers forward with intention…those riffs are downright ominous and scary. Ambient, melancholy elements are present as well. The riff slows for a bit, then picks back up, ending on a slow and low note. “Vesuve” opens with dark clean guitar notes that echo into the background. Heavy drum thuds fill the air. A series of bloodcurdling screams accompany the slow, heavy guitar strikes. The sounds builds to a harrowing crescendo.

“Ecueil” is just over five-minutes in length. Atmospheric tones lurk in the background. Here is where the Post elements come into play. Sad, depressing tones combine with some synth. “Sans Seves” is a shorter but faster moving song. The sound is still very dejected…like you are living in a post-apocalyptic hell, with no resources, and no shelter. The world is burning around you. “In Humus” is over eight-minutes in length. It opens with light, atmospheric tones, with soft drum beats in the background. It slowly builds, with soft, spoken words. Then come the anguished screams, like someone is being tortured in hell. It picks up in intensity after the half-way mark.

“Nitre” closes the album, with a totally different feeling. Birds chirping in the opening is an unusual positivity for the genre. The sound is so calm and gentle, going against the rest of the songs with stark boldness. There is still a darkness present but it seems to be receding just a bit. It fades to nothing at the end. Overall, if ever there was an album to make you feel like the world has literally ended, “Sel de Pierre” is it. You are all alone, as everything is burning around you. All of your loved ones are dead, and you are trying to just exist, and it seems pointless. Now, the only thing you can consider is how you are going to just end everything. This is a band to keep an eye on for sure.
