Vox Tempus - Demo (CD)

Vox Tempus
by Thodoris Pantazopoulos at 07 June 2004, 10:58 PM

From the ashes of a progressive rock band, Equinox , a new one is borne with the same musical directions that carries the name Vox Tempus.
The band plays sufficiently well progressive rock/metal having as main influences bands like Dream Theater, Threshold and Rush. And this is not entirely unexpected 'cause all Vox Tempus' members have a history behind them in the music scene.
Guitarist Ray Mantor and bassist Jim Turba had tasted relative success with their previous band (Equinox) as their debut album, Colour of the time, reached the top 20 charts in Europe and Japan. Also, their keyboard player, Eric Ragno, has played in the 3rd album of hard rockers Takara. Not to mention another band member's activites, Gregg Bissonette, who is one of the most well known sessionists in the rock scene.
The three songs sound pleasurably despite the fact that their similarities with the aforementioned bands are at times glaring. Especially, the 3rd song, What About, has almost the same rhythm with Dream Theater's Caught In A Web. But I must take under consideration that this is a primal release-sign of what's going to follow next, so the result is rather cheering.
My only complaints concern the band's vocalist, Dan Reed, whose voice most of the time stays in high pitch levels and tires the listener. He seems to have a really capable voice but he needs some practice to sound more expressive.
Fans of Progressive Rock/Metal should check the band's first release that will include among others 2 of the demo's songs (Revelations and What About). I believe that Vox Tempus is a fine alternative choice for their hearings.
