Vultwraith – Decomposing Spells

Decomposing Spells
by Dave "That Metal Guy" Campbell at 22 May 2023, 4:59 AM

From Bandcamp, “Deep within the tenebrous bowels of a dark and decrepit castle was it that the black ritual was undertaken. Assembled there were two of the worst sinners this world has ever known, utterly profane and perverse: The Warlock, He of all Blasphemies, and Esteban Walpurgis, He of all Evil Rites.” “Decomposing Spells” has ten songs. “Wax Cylinder Apparition” is the first. Cold winds howl gently, and a riff drops, akin to the classic age of riffing. The vocals vary from screams to horrid gutturals. The breakdown is slow and has audible bass notes.

“The Devil’s Dish Served Cold” has another simple, mid-tempo riff, and although the harsh vocals are harrowing, the riffing needs some work. The mid-section has a slightly different riff in the vein of IRON MAIDEN. “Carnivorous Coven” has a faster and more aggressive riff out of the gates. Again, the vocals are the vilest part of the music, but the riffs need some updating. “Church Burned” begins with some clean guitars, before it segues into another mid-tempo riff. If nothing else, the riffing could vary a bit more. But the middle section is interesting with the haunting backing vocals.

“The Sinister Scythe” is another mid-tempo song with some phasing issues here and there. It reminds me of if early Iron Maiden decided the dabble in Black Metal, and for once, the main riff brings some power with it. “Full Circle Possession” is a shorter song but has yet another mid-tempo riff. I have said this many times…to many of these songs with the same pace can weight down an album. The howls in the middle of the song are nine, however, and give the song a heavier edge. “Hearse Hauntress” is again another mid-tempo song. Without much variation in the pacing, many of these songs just run together.

“Of Skeletons and Metal” closes the album, and you guessed it, another mid-tempo song. I suppose on some level that the overuse of songs with these paces keeps the album somewhat harrowing, but in terms of the music, it makes for a boring listening experience. It’s not a total loss, as the band does inject some different background sounds every now and then that are well-placed. But overall, besides the frightening vocals, this album doesn’t have much to offer fans.
