Welkins Boreal - Ashes

Welkins Boreal
Ashes
by Laura Glover at 10 September 2020, 7:08 AM

Finnish artist, Teemu Kautonen started his journey into music in the beginning of one of several decades known for the music it created; the 90’s. This is the starting place of what would later conceptualize into WELKINS BOREAL in 2018; a gothic metal band with influences such as GHOST. After the long reprieve from the 90’s to 2018, Teemu was ready to solidify his vision; brining us the newest EP, “Ashes”. From the wild and uninitiated teenager with a fire for music, to the impassioned adult with much more experience. In September 2019, he released a remake of a few of the various songs from his first ventures; releasing the album “Phantoms of Yesteryear”. In late 2019, two new members joined the band. Aki Koponen on guitar and backing vocals and Toni Paananen as a session drummer. The trio put their heads together and are releasing “Ashes” on September 11, 2020.

Are You a Witch” - There is definite similarities to the kind of “pop/rock/metal” sound that GHOST has. Lyrics are written almost like a poem, very gothic and intense. The intro brings to mind a hellish carousel ride, creepily played organ perhaps? Or synthesized keyboard, one or the other. The vocals as well, sound in a highly similar fashion to Tobias Forge and his nameless ghouls. “Triumph of Steel” - For starters, every single part of this song makes me think of J.R.R. Tolkien'sThe Lord of the Rings” and the battle of Rohan. This is a battle song, a story of an army on their last night. Pensively in their beds, feeling the approaching footfalls of thousands. The marchers approach and the battle ensues. Leading to ultimate victory and bloodshed. A mournful song, in lyrics and tone. With a slow, thought provoking beat. “Ashes” - “From the ashes of fool's paradise we will soar”. The lyrics are profound in places, again in that poetic nuance. This song has a catchy beat, again not a hard one. Rather one you could tap your foot to. This song is the conclusion to the concept story on this EP. It talks about death and the end of the world, ultimate destruction and release.

WELKINS BOREAL seems to be in a good place musically. Sometimes we have to be that “rough around the edges” teenager to ultimately hone our skills and passion. Everyone has to start somewhere. It is where you go from there that matters. “Ashes” was a good EP, one built with thought and obvious care. Their hard work is clearly obvious in the way that they, themselves, tell their own story and present their EP as a whole.
