Within The Fall - Navigator

Within The Fall
by Metal Wim at 18 September 2022, 11:46 AM

WITHIN THE FALL is a Melodic Death/Doom Metal band from Sweden formed in 2010 by guitarist Mike Wennerstrand and vocalist Joakim Rudemyr. The band's sound has evolved since its inception, but the Melodic and Melancholic core is ever present in the music. I actually got sent the digital version of “Navigator” by bassist Henrik Ekholm. I really am glad he did, because I like this. Even though I have to admit that I was quite worried when the music started, due to the digital sounds, that could have taken me anywhere.

Thankfully the title song “Navigator” develops itself int a very emotional, atmospheric Doom Metal based song, with Goth Metal expansions as well as Death Metal explosions, making it the most versatile and surprising song on this EP. Add to that the variation in vocal expressions, and you will be able to understand why this is not for the faint-hearted, or don’t feel that adventure should be used too much in music. Well, I love that aspect, and therefore the title song.

The other three songs have all been released earlier this year as singles, but feel absolutely in the right places on the EP. WITHIN THE FALL have made sure that everything put together is coherent, is fitting. “A Life In Silence” starts rather slow and melodic in music and style, with vocals to match. Slowly but surely the song expands itself into the heavier areas, with adding to the pace. When listening to it, it becomes quite clear that WITHIN THE FALL doesn’t produce background music. No, this needs to be listened to intently. That’s when the full impact of it all comes to fruition. if you just put it on as background noise, it will only slink away. And to be quite frank, it doesn’t deserve that.

The fastest song is up next. “Tomorrow” is deeply rooted in Death Metal vibes, without losing the Doom Metal feelings throughout. It isn’t one of those musical explosions that will shake your foundation, but is also isn’t something to be sniffed at. Last but not least we have “Harbour Of Souls”, which is the most mainstream song on the EP. It still touches all that WITHIN THE FALL stands for, but also leaves another positive impression musically. And as all the music is produced to quite a good level, all that the band wishes you to hear is there for you to experience. It makes “Navigator” into a very pleasant EP, making you want to hear more.
