When I learned that the new
AT THE GATES DVD had reached the
Metal Temple headquarters I sharpened my sword since I knew that there would be a battle for its acquisition. Finally, bloody and sweaty I managed to get it only to realize that it was nothing more than a screening copy that contained only the first of the total three DVD's that are included in
"The Flames Of The End"! Lucky, yet kind of disappointed, I started watching it…
"The Flames Of The End" is taken from the outro that was used in the album
"Slaughter Of The Soul" (1995). This DVD (the first one which I am going to talk about since it is the only one I got) is a documentary that covers the whole
AT THE GATES history, from when its members were just kids and went to school to the split up and the reunion.
"Under A Serpent Sun: The Story Of AT THE GATES" as this disc is named features almost every member that has been a member of the legendary Swedish maniacs (except for
Tony Andersson) talking about the early days, the difficulties the band had to face throughout its career, various incidents that happened during some of their tours, as well as other 'spicy' little details.
Tomas Lindberg guides the viewer through every place the band has visited, like their rehearsal rooms, the places they used to hang out etc.
In this
Anders Bjorler directed documentary, you will also have the chance to see well known artists or people involved in the music industry like
Shane Embury (
NAPALM DEATH) or
Fredrik Nordstrom for example, who produced some of the bands albums. I believe that this documentary covers every single aspect of the band and offers the fan exactly what he needs (or should I say even more). Over two hours of
AT THE GATES madness people!
The other two discs of this DVD set which I unfortunately do not have (but will surely purchase) contain a full 75 live set from the band's performance at
Wacken in 2008 (disc #2) and 26 rare and archived live performances of the band playing in locations around the globe from 1991 to 2008 (Greek fans will surely find their treat in here).
