Jorn - Live In America (DVD)

Live In America (DVD)
by Dimitris Kontogeorgakos at 17 February 2009, 4:20 PM

This is the visual 'edition' of the Live In America double CD album that was released in 2009. Jorn and his band visited the US for the first time and for this filmed the Atlanta live show. There, the band headlined one of the 'Progpower VII' festival days introducing most of Jorn musical stops in his long and (why not?) successful career. Personally, I believe that Jorn has one of the best Metal voices in the Metal scene. I mean, his voice comprises deep influences from all the classics spanning from Dio to Coverdale while keeping a distinct character and timbre.
The concert kicks in rather numb with the mid tempo We Brought The Angels Down; I think that something faster would steam up a little bit the US fans who overall look like having a good time in a theater and not in a Hard Rock concert. Things get better as the setlist progresses while the first signs of positive reactions from the crowd come with the dirty Rocker The Duke Of Love that thankfully is the third song. Jorn proves that has a massive voice performing all the tracks without loosing an inch from the studio versions. Ok, I know that things 'get better' in the studio but by looking and listening closely I did not get the impression of an over-production. One thing that I was waiting to see was Jorn on-stage presence; unfortunately he is nothing special apart from the trademark Coverdale moves with the microphone stand but hey, you can have everything in one package…
As expected the highlight of the gig is the killer encore that is served with the WHITESNAKE medley; it really impressive to watch and listen to Jorn who sounds so confident under the heavy shadow of Coverdale paying the proper respect to his vocal patterns. In fact the cover songs share the same Hard Rock atmosphere with the originals performed by the band totally relieved and relaxed from the initial stage-fright. Just listen to Crying In The Rain and Here I Go Again to feel my saying in contrary to the US audience that is simply standing, foot taping and in some cases is applauding.
Technically speaking the DVD has a clear picture with a 16:9 widescreen format and a really fat sound with boosted guitars that hit you with a hearty live feeling. The video shooting was done with an overall basic camera orientation that is mainly focused on the on-stage action leaving (wisely) aside the 'cold' audience.
The DVD comes with a simple menu without fancy graphics or anything impressive beside the essential options. I hope that the promo version that I have in hands features only the concert and that the regular version will hold some bonus material that are required to spice things up in DVDs.
For all the Jorn fans this is a must; the audio release will be completed with the DVD on its side. The release has a good timing for Jorn's career who based on my standards is underrated.
P.S.: I think that Jorn wears sun glasses on-stage because he's reading the lyrics placed on his monitor…(not that it matters to me)
