Obsolete - Animate-Isolate

OBSOLETE is a four-piece Death/Thrash Metal band from Minnesota formed in about 2018. Their debut album, "Animate-Isolate" was released April 19, 2021 through Unspeakable Axe Records.

From the onset, OBSOLETE have but one goal, to unleash their latest album. “Still” is the opening track and it bolts out of the gate with unrelenting fury. Blast beats, a rapid-fire bass line and two guitars ripping out a riff that is guaranteed to make a Thrash fan stop in their tracks and listen are the basis of this song. Lyrically, it’s about the corruption found from obtaining absolute power. There are no clean lyrics, but the growl fits the theme and sound better anyway, so clean would sound out of place.

The Slough” begins with a more melodic riff. Don’t mistake this for something gentle and kind. More melodic means it doesn’t melt your face from the start. Gentle for OBSOLETE is still Thrash Metal. This just shows an ability to slow things down and still set a mood and tone that is brutal. Another example of this really nice shift in tones and tempos is “Stumbling And Listless”. Melodic Death Metal is not a onetime occurrence for these guys, they revisit it over and over again, with great skill.

Going back to raging speed and frenzied tempo, you have “Silent Freeway,” an absolute speed freak of a song. This is a song that will leave the audience gasping for air and trying to recover their breath since they’ve been thrashing and screaming with abandon. In a similar vein, “Callousness Of Soul” is another complete piledriver. This is a song that picks you up and throws you down, then steps over you and grins at you as you lie there broken.

Wrapping the record up is “Intercostal,” the longest song on the record at just short of six minutes. The lyrics seem to refer to those spaces between the ribs where pain is the most intense. It appears father has failed to protect that space, leaving the child vulnerable and susceptible. The song doesn’t specify if the pain is physical or emotional, but it can be interpreted either way, just depends on what you hear when listening for yourself. Songs that let you decide for yourself are often my favorite as it lets the listener feel the song on a visceral level.

OBSOLETE is a technically precise band that can speed through a song with great precision. The musicians are very good and show their prowess on every song. It takes great skill to combine all of these elements into this kind of music. They stick with Death and Thrash most of the time, but do venture into Black, Doom and Speed metals at times. Every time they hit those genres, they do so with great care and skill.
