Soulless – Shine In Purity

Soulless
Shine In Purity

SOULLESS is a black metal band from Indonesia who formed in 2017. "Shine In Purity" is the third full length album. It is actually a one man project from Rivanectomy; under the SOULLESS moniker, he has also released two splits and two demos. How can something so abrasive at times also be so pretty? That is a question I asked myself while listening to this emotive album. There are moments of pure bliss on "Shine In Purity"  that feel me with hope and grandeur even while I am beaten down with the crushing weight of existence that this black metal band brings out.

This is a difficult album to talk about because it is pure atmosphere and mood. Sure, it has all the hallmarks of atmo black metal but this album isn’t about having intricate guitar work or the best riffs. The bass and drums are serviceable but nothing really stands out. I don't mean that as a bad thing. What I do mean is this isn't an album where individual instruments shine nor is that the point. This is instead a collection of songs that weave a very lush tapestry of pictures that are within the mind and painted with music.

The first track, "Arunika" begins with ambient tones and falling rain. It is a long intro that builds up but this style of atmo black needs this—it adds anticipation and makes the moment the song comes together all the more sweet. The riffs are heavy and slow, very much in the element of doom. The vocals are tortured but they still work with the backdrop of everything that is going on, including the heavy layering of keys.

The key to this album is taking it all as a whole—this isn't meant for dissecting per say but to just let it wash over you…and go wherever it may take you. SOULLESS isn't afraid to let the non metal parts of the sound take center stage either.  A good example is the track "Remember." The first half of the song is sparse tones that pick up clean keys and bass along the way. Much like life itself, the song begins as one thing but takes on another later. This ability to meld non traditional elements into black metal is what really sets the album apart.

"I See The Light In Your Eyes," switches back and forth between the razor's edge and easy listening.  The beginning is almost water like with the way the growing melodies just seem to flow. Afterwards some of the album's heavier black metal portions hit hard before fading off again. SOULESS' "Shine In Purity" is an album that begs to be experienced and is happy to reward those with the patience to let it sink in.
