Zhakiah - Where the Light Will Thread

Where the Light Will Thread

The music on offer here on “Where The Light Will Thread” comes across as, what I can best describe as Progressive Melodic Death Metal.  All the Melo Death elements are there, the deep sonorous growl of the vocals, the pounding drum line, the riffs, melody, but there are elements of Prog, almost Sci-Fi in places.

The project is the creation of Jani Sefanovic. Things started to take shape in 2018-2019, with both the vocals and instrumentation undertaken by his good self. Opening with the obligatory cinematic intro piece, “Spirits Perfection” gets things going properly and delivers a large slab of Melodic Death Metal, pure and simple.  And perhaps is indicative of the albums shortcomings. When it is being close to its roots such as this track and others, “Where The Light Will Thread”, “Black Void Of Old” for example, are just a tad generic.  I think it is possibly down to the double kick drums being over powering and repetitive, swamping the sound.

However on the tracks where the sound is a bit more progressive, such as “Ancient Of Days” for example, where there is more balance, more structure, the sound is brilliant, but there isn’t enough of this to balance the good and the not so good.  I have to have the utmost respect for any musician who has the skills to produce a full album of creditable songs, but there is however at times the lack of another’s input, a sounding board to offer a second opinion at times, to add balance, something personally I feel is lacking at times here.

Sadly an example of this is final track “The Encasing Of Ashes”.  There was too much going on, the sound was too dense and the drums far too prominent. I’m afraid for me the balance of the sound was all wrong.  There was some nice guitar work in places, the vocals were gravelly and growly in the right measures, but the drums dominated the overall sound detrimentally, I simply didn’t enjoy listening to it mainly. What could have been very good and clever, for me became mediocre and average, sorry.
