Zohamah - Spread My Ashes Award winner

Spread My Ashes
by Kayla Hutton at 27 March 2019, 2:34 AM

Formed in June 2017, here we have a one band. The sole creator known only as H.M. hails from Israel under the band moniker ZOHAMAH. "Spread my Ashes" marks ZOHAMAH's first full-length album released Feb 1st, 2019 via Redefining Darkness Records. First and foremost, "Spread My Ashes" plays host to some very amazing production quality. This alleviates any and all fear of one guy over dubbing on an old Tascam with a drum machine. Second, this is a multi-instrumentalist. Not a guitarist taking a terrible stab at attempting to fill the gaps with the mediocre playing of other instruments. Let us get down to business.

The opener "New World" is exactly that. An exploration of unknown territory that spans the gloom of doom, the darkness of black, and around the three and a half minute mark transcends into the ambiance of rain falling, bullets flying, explosions and an epic whispered voice over top elegantly played acoustic guitars. While it is short-lived, "New World" dives back into with a shrill death metal shriek and murky guitar lines. "Emptiness" is a good take on what BATHORY would sound like slowed down. Dominant in the guitar riffs that tell a story on their own. Vocals that are soaked in a ravage of blood, trials, and tribulations. There is no shortage of suffering depicted by the music as well as the vocals. Being a one-man band it's odd to say there is a band dynamic playing out. Everything is perfectly timed and accentuated. While the track does accelerate in tempo, the mood of doom and gloom still permeates the senses. Double bass kicks with periodic ride cymbals gallop along to the tremolo picking.

The albums title track "Spread my Ashes" is the shortest track coming in at 1:53. Again, depicting the soundtrack an abysmal war with explosions and rain playing out from all angles in 5.1 surround sound A distorted plucked melody is loaded with sorrow while a lead guitar plays in harmony and disbelief. "Spread My Ashes" is a surefire delight for fans of black and doom metal. Higher pitched screams of vocals, more actual guitar riffs rather than an onslaught of fast one note riding and blast beats. While I am not witness to the sights that H.M. has seen or the trials that surround his atmosphere in which he draws inspiration, his music defines a bleak environment filled with disharmony. His music is nothing short of an opus of suffering.
